The Best Sports Songs of All-Time

May 4, 2009

The thrill of victory... and the agony of defeat... the human drama of athletic competition. That quote, it captures why sports are so great. And music, it's what intensifies that drama and that thrill. These songs do it better than any others.

11Not even placing it in the top 10, I fully expect to take some flack for the placement of Take Me Out to the Ballgame. It's as American as apple pie, but it can't pull rank on the other songs on this list.

10During timeouts and between innings, we never seem to tire of this tried beat, that cheesy dance that is the Y-M-C-A.

Honorable mention to a video
that almost made this list:

Heart of a Champion, Nelly

9To every kid growing up in the 90s, the Chicago Bulls and Michael Jordan were as big as it got. That intro music with the scoreboard bull charging through the streets of Chicago... it's called Sirius Instrumental by Alan Parsons Project.

8To grow up in the 90s was to grow up on the Jock James CD. Let's get ready to rumble!!!

7Not only a great sports song, but Eye of the Tiger will forever be linked with Rocky—one the great sports movies of all time.

6In terms of getting a crowd on their feet, We Will Rock You places second, only behind the #1 overall song on this list. As the only artists with two songs on the list, honorable mention goes to Queen for being the greatest musical contributor to sports.

5Including the Monday Night Football theme, the next three are iconic tunes that signal the start of competition. At least while these are pumping through surround, watching the start of a broadcast from home can be just as good as being in the stands. Are you ready for some football?

4Watching NBA ball hasn't been the same since it left NBA and Roundball Rock behind. This is a great clip of composer John Tesh explaining the background behind the song, then performing it live.

3Nothing in sports gives me chills like an Olympic highlight reel with accompanied by NBC's broadcast theme. The song is called Bugler's Dream, composed by Leo Arnaud and originally used for an Olympic broadcast in ABC's 1968 coverage of the Winter Games.

2Nothing says "we just kicked your ass" better than We Are the Champions. And that is why you'll never see a championship trophy been hoisted without Queen booming from the background.

1When the home team needs a lift, there's only one song to turn to. The Rock and Roll Part 2 beat is every bit as essential to a game as the ball. Thank you, Gary Glitter, for giving us the best sports song of all-time.
